Skrive bedre fagtekster

Richard Sennett deltok på LSEs Literary Festival forrige uke, med foredraget Sociology as Literature (lydopptak her). Her delte han sine tanker om hvordan man kan skrive bedre fagtekster, og la blant annet vekt på at samfunnsforskere bør unngå å "dumme ned" tekstene sine når de henvender seg til det allmenne publikum. Ved å overforenkle faglige funn og argumenter fratar man leserens mulighet til å være en 'critical partner in the writer's own thinking.'

The politics of talking down to the reader evinces also an error in the understanding of writing itself. People who commit this error may imagine that they can know before they write. That they gather their data and thoughts, and then, as the English phrase has it, 'write up the results' - displaying to others what they have already thought through. Whereas the act of writing should be a laboratory - a workshop for thinking - and not an after-the-facts presentation.

Den siste setningen synes jeg ser ut som et glimrende forsvar for blogging som verktøy for faglig skriving.
